"I worked directly with James as a colleague for over a year. He gets to know his patients well and is always interested in coordinating care for their best psychological improvement. He engages with kids from childhood through adolescence and gives appropriate and motivating guidance that is appropriate for developmental ages and stages. He has innovative ideas about involving youngsters in social groups and learning to express their best selves and build better peer relationships."

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

James Verdery is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Acton, MA. James works with children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults who struggle to manage their emotions. His clients find themselves overwhelmed by feelings of anger, frustration, confusion, sadness, or loneliness. Despite their best intentions to help themselves, they feel like they aren’t in control of their lives, which makes them even more upset. They might suffer from low self-esteem, which causes anxiety at school, work, or in peer groups and often leads to isolation. James helps these clients to grow their understanding of themselves, their emotions and learn techniques to manage their distress.
James’ approach to working with adolescent, teenage, and adult clients draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Psychodynamic Therapies. Clients learn tangible skills in emotional regulation. They practice challenging assumptions, ignoring self-judgments, distraction and grounding exercises, and more. With younger clients, James uses play therapy to give them ways to express themselves. He encourages all clients to recognize what makes them unique and how resilient they already are, leading to a boost in confidence as they go through their daily lives, including school. James tailors his treatment style to each client’s individual needs, personalities, and preferences for engaging, effective sessions.
James earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. He is passionate about starting conversations about mental health at an early age. He strives to give clients the skills they need for a lifetime of healthy habits, including strong coping skills that allow individuals to feel meaning and joy in their lives.
